Aldersgate is a compact ward on the northern edge of the City of London, sitting along Aldersgate Street where the medieval city wall once stood. The streets show a striking contrast between surviving fragments of the old City and the post‑war concrete of the Barbican Estate, with cultural neighbours such as the Barbican Centre and the Museum of London close by.
Today the ward is largely commercial, home to financial and professional firms, though a small residential community is centred in the Barbican. It has an evocative history - the street gave the ward its name and is remembered for the 1738 religious experience of John Wesley, a touchstone in the story of Methodism - and, like other parts of the Square Mile, is governed through an Alderman and Common Councilmen representing local business and residents.
