Andover is a modest market town in the borough of Test Valley, Hampshire, England, set where the chalk-stream River Anton meets the fertile vale drained by the famous River Test. Its roots go back to Saxon and medieval times and it grew as a coaching and market centre; the town also figures in 19th-century social history because of a well-known workhouse scandal. Much of the centre reflects Victorian and post-war redevelopment alongside older lanes and parish churches.
Today Andover functions as a local commercial and light industrial hub with retail and business parks, good road and rail connections into London and the south, and serves as a gateway to the chalk downland of Salisbury Plain. Outdoor interests are strong because of the chalk streams and surrounding countryside popular with walkers and anglers, while small museums and community events keep a modest cultural life in the town.
