Backworth is a village in North Tyneside in the north‑east of England, a few miles north of Newcastle and close to the coastal fringe at Whitley Bay. It grew up as a coal‑mining community in the 18th and 19th centuries, and although the pits have gone the former industrial landscape and rows of miners’ cottages still give the place a strong sense of its past.
Today Backworth is largely a residential, commuter village with a mix of older stone buildings and later housing, local shops, pubs and active community groups (including sports clubs). Good road and Metro‑area links via nearby Palmersville and Shiremoor make it easy to reach employment and leisure centres, while green spaces and the village community help preserve a distinct local identity.
