Bridgend is a compact market town in South Wales, roughly midway between Cardiff and Swansea on the M4 corridor. It sits where the River Ogmore winds through the town and close to historic sites such as Ogmore Castle, while the extensive sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr and the seaside resort of Porthcawl are only a short drive away.
Originally a medieval market and river crossing that expanded in the 19th century with rail and industry, Bridgend now has a mixed economy of light manufacturing, distribution and retail - including the Bridgend Designer Outlet - and serves as the administrative centre for Bridgend County Borough. The town retains a strong local identity with bilingual Welsh–English culture, active community arts and sports scenes, and good commuter links to the larger cities along the M4.
