Great Wakering is a coastal village in the district of Rochford, Essex, in eastern England, sitting close to the mouth of the River Roach and the saltmarshes of the Maplin Sands opposite Foulness Island. Its low-lying landscape of mudflats and sea walls gives it a strong maritime and agricultural character, and there are visible reminders of coastal defence and rural heritage around the village and the wider Dengie peninsula.
Today Great Wakering combines a long-established local community with commuters travelling to Southend-on-Sea and beyond; local life centres on village shops, pubs and sports, notably Great Wakering Rovers F.C. at Burroughs Park. The nearby marshes and estuary are important for birdwatching and coastal walks, making the village of interest to both residents and visitors who enjoy wildlife and seaside landscape rather than more traditional seaside tourism.
