Lewes is the county town of East Sussex in England, sitting in the steep valley of the River Ouse beneath the chalk spine of the South Downs. Its compact medieval streets, Norman Lewes Castle and the atmospheric ruins of Lewes Priory reflect a long history that includes the 1264 Battle of Lewes, so much of the town feels like a living history set amid rolling downland.
Today Lewes has a lively cultural and social scene, famous for its Bonfire Night societies and the nearby Glyndebourne opera, alongside a strong independent retail quarter and traditional brewer Harveys Brewery. Tourism, creative industries and small-scale farming on the downs combine with a politically active, community-minded population and easy commuter links to Brighton and London, giving the town a pleasing mix of local character and cosmopolitan energy.
