New Hartley is a small village on the coastal fringe of Northumberland in England, lying close to the Northumberland coast and near communities such as Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay. Traditionally a colliery village, it has a modest residential character today with local shops, a village hall and social clubs, and many residents commute to larger towns for work while still keeping a strong local identity.
The village is best known for the tragic Hartley Colliery disaster of 1862, when 204 men and boys lost their lives; a memorial in the cemetery and annual remembrances reflect that legacy. The catastrophe had national impact on mining law, helping drive changes that improved mine safety by requiring safer access to workings, and mining heritage remains an important part of the village’s history and community memory.
