Rhymney is a former industrial town in the northern reaches of Caerphilly county, lying in the heart of the Rhymney Valley in south Wales. The town grew up around 19th‑century ironworks and coal mines, with the River Rhymney running through it; that industrial legacy shaped much of the local landscape and architecture, and the long decline of mining has led to modern regeneration efforts and a quieter, more residential character.
Despite economic changes, Rhymney retains a strong sense of community and cultural identity - from miners’ institutes and local rugby clubs to its place in literature and song (Idris Davies’s poem "The Bells of Rhymney" is the town’s best‑known cultural echo). Its position in the valleys also means easy access to rolling uplands and outdoor routes towards the national park country north of Cardiff, making it a small town with both industrial history and countryside appeal.
