Sutton is a pleasant suburban town in the south of London, around ten miles from the city centre and historically part of Surrey until 1965. It has a compact town centre of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, good rail links for commuters and a surprising number of parks and green spaces, giving it a quieter, family-friendly feel compared with inner London.
The town punches above its weight culturally and economically: venues such as the Secombe Theatre and community projects like the Sutton Life Centre sit alongside strong local retail and schools. Sutton is also home to nationally important medical research and care, with the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital nearby, which shape the local economy and identity.
