Tonyrefail is a village in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales, its name coming from the Welsh Ton yr Efail, roughly "the meadow of the smithy". Like many communities in the South Wales Valleys it expanded during the 19th and early 20th century with coal and iron industries, and traces of that industrial past remain in the landscape and local memory.
Today Tonyrefail combines that heritage with a strong community feel - local sports clubs, choirs and community centres remain important - and functions partly as a commuter settlement within reach of Cardiff. There has been regeneration and new housing alongside long-established terraces, so the village mixes its mining history with modern local life.
