Crook is a small former market town in County Durham, England, sitting on the edge of the old Durham coalfield about ten miles west of Durham. It grew quickly in the 19th century around coal mining and ironworking, which shaped its Victorian terraces and market-square layout.
Since the decline of heavy industry the town has become a modest local centre with independent shops, community organisations and sports clubs, and many people now commute to nearby towns for work. Crook retains a strong community spirit and good access to the surrounding Durham countryside for walking and outdoor pursuits.
