Gateshead sits on the south bank of the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne as part of the wider Tyneside conurbation. Historically it grew from coal, shipbuilding and heavy industry, and many of its Victorian terraces and parks, such as Saltwell Park, reflect that industrial past while regeneration has reshaped much of the riverside.
Today Gateshead is known for striking cultural landmarks like the Angel of the North, the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the riverside arts venues of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Sage Gateshead. Economic life is a mix of retail and service-sector growth around Gateshead Quays and the long-established industrial and logistics presence at Team Valley, while the borough continues to balance ongoing regeneration with diverse local communities.
