Map of the UK

Swindon sits in north Wiltshire in England, just south of the Cotswolds and close to the M4. It grew rapidly in the 19th century around the Great Western Railway works associated with Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the town still shows a contrast between the historic Old Town with its Georgian streets and the later industrial and New Town‑era suburbs, with the River Cole running through parts of the borough.

Today Swindon has a mixed economy: its railway heritage is celebrated at the STEAM Museum and a former works site now hosts the Swindon Designer Outlet, while major employers are in national services, distribution and technology parks; the 2021 closure of the Honda plant was a notable recent shift. Ongoing housing developments such as Wichelstowe, plus a lively local arts and theatre scene, give the town a blend of commuter‑town energy, industrial history and growing cultural life.
